“My goal in a tummy tuck is not just a flat abdomen; with muscle repair and careful planning, it is a natural, athletic torso line in proportion with the body.”
We have compiled the 45 questions patients ask most about tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) in Istanbul, answered by Op. Dr. Selman Taşkın. For the essentials and video explanations, see our main tummy tuck treatment page.
Candidacy and Preparation
Should I be at my ideal weight before a tummy tuck?
Being close to your target weight and stable for at least 3-6 months gives the best result. A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss method; Op. Dr. Selman Taşkın recommends planning surgery once your weight has settled. Small fluctuations (±3-4 kg) will not spoil the result.
Is there a BMI limit for a tummy tuck?
For safety, most surgeons prefer a body mass index below roughly 30-32; at higher BMI, wound-healing and clot risks increase. If you are borderline, losing weight first or a staged liposuction-first approach is discussed together at your consultation.
Can I have a tummy tuck if I smoke?
Smoking impairs skin circulation and significantly raises the risk of wound breakdown and tissue loss. The general rule: stop smoking and all nicotine products (including vaping) completely at least 4 weeks before surgery and for 4 weeks afterwards.
What happens to my C-section scar?
In a full tummy tuck the C-section scar usually sits within the skin that is removed, so it goes with the excess tissue; you are left with a single, more neatly planned tummy tuck scar instead.
What if I plan another pregnancy after a tummy tuck?
If possible, postpone surgery until you have completed your family. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is safe, but because the muscles and skin can stretch again, the result may be compromised and a revision may become necessary.
Is there an age limit for a tummy tuck?
Anyone over 18 in good general health can be a candidate. Rather than an upper age limit, what matters is heart-lung health and how well any chronic conditions are controlled; suitability is confirmed with an examination and tests.
Do diabetes or high blood pressure prevent a tummy tuck?
They are not a barrier, but they must be well controlled; uncontrolled diabetes impairs wound healing. All your medications are reviewed during planning, and internal-medicine clearance is requested when needed.
Which medications should I stop before surgery?
Aspirin and blood thinners, some painkillers (NSAIDs) and herbal supplements (omega-3, ginkgo etc.) are usually stopped 1-2 weeks beforehand under medical guidance. Never stop prescription medication on your own.
What tests are done before a tummy tuck?
A blood count, clotting tests, biochemistry, an ECG and chest assessment when indicated, and an anesthesia consultation are standard. The goal is to document that general anesthesia and surgery are safe for you.
Surgery and Technique
What type of anesthesia is used for a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia; you are asleep throughout and feel no pain. The anesthesiologist evaluates you separately before the operation.
How many nights will I stay in hospital?
You are usually monitored in hospital for 1-2 nights. Early walking and the first dressing change happen during this stay; at discharge you receive your follow-up plan and care instructions.
Is the belly button repositioned?
In a full tummy tuck, yes: the navel is preserved on its own stalk and brought out through a new, natural-looking opening in the tightened skin. In a mini tummy tuck the navel is usually not moved.
Do the muscle repair sutures dissolve?
The separated rectus muscles are brought together at the midline with special sutures (plication). Long-lasting or absorbable sutures are typically used; once healing is complete, the repair itself is permanent.
What is a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck?
It is a technique for severe vertical and horizontal skin excess, typically after massive weight loss; a vertical scar is added to the horizontal one, allowing far more skin removal with a strong waist-narrowing effect.
What is a 360 tummy tuck?
It combines a tummy tuck with circumferential liposuction of the waist and back; the goal is the entire torso silhouette, not just the front of the abdomen. Suitability depends on your body type and is decided at consultation.
How much skin is removed?
The amount depends entirely on your anatomy: the goal is to safely remove the excess skin below the navel and close with balanced tension. The right amount is not as much as possible, but as much as circulation safely allows.
Do I need to fast before surgery?
Yes; for anesthesia safety, eating and drinking are usually stopped 6-8 hours before surgery. The anesthesia team tells you the exact times and which medications you may take with a sip of water.
Recovery
When can I return to desk work vs physical work?
Most patients return to desk jobs within about 2 weeks; physically demanding jobs with heavy lifting need 4-6 weeks. Walking slightly bent forward is normal at first, and you straighten up gradually within about a week.
When can I drive after a tummy tuck?
Once you no longer need strong painkillers and can brake suddenly without discomfort — around 10-14 days for most patients. If the seatbelt presses on the incision, place a soft pad underneath it.
When can I shower?
Usually 48-72 hours after surgery, depending on your dressing plan and your surgeon's go-ahead. Baths, pools and the sea must wait until the wounds are fully closed (about 4-6 weeks).
When are the stitches removed?
Most sutures dissolve on their own; any that need removing are usually taken out around days 10-14. The incision line is reviewed together at your follow-up visits.
How long does swelling last?
Most visible swelling settles within the first 2-3 weeks; mild edema and tightness can continue for 2-3 months. Most of the final result is visible by the end of the third month.
How should I sleep after a tummy tuck?
For the first 1-2 weeks, sleep on your back with your head and knees slightly raised (the beach-chair position) to reduce tension on the incision. Side sleeping is gradually allowed with your surgeon's approval.
Is lymphatic drainage massage necessary?
It is not mandatory; however, especially in cases combined with liposuction, it can help swelling settle faster. The right timing and suitability are decided at your follow-up visit.
When can I resume sexual activity?
Usually gradually after 3-4 weeks, provided there is no pressure or strain on the abdominal wall. Let pain be your guide; if anything feels strained, wait a little longer.
How do I avoid constipation and straining?
Painkillers can cause constipation; drink plenty of water, eat fiber-rich food and use a doctor-approved stool softener if needed. Straining increases pressure on the muscle repair, so avoid it especially in the first weeks.
After the 6-week garment, do I need shapewear?
It is not required; after the six-week medical compression period, some patients choose light shapewear for comfort. What truly protects your result is a stable weight, not the garment.
How are follow-up visits scheduled?
A typical plan: a dressing check in the first week, then reviews at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months. For international patients, later follow-ups can continue via photos and video calls.
Scars and Results
When does the scar fade?
The scar looks pink and noticeable for the first 2-3 months, then gradually fades and flattens over 6-12 months. Final scar quality depends on your genetics, tissue healing and consistent scar care.
What scar care is recommended?
Once the wound is fully closed, regular silicone gel or sheets, sun protection (SPF) and gentle massage help the scar mature. Direct sun exposure in the first year can permanently darken the scar.
Will the scar be hidden by underwear or a bikini?
Yes; the incision is planned as low as possible so that it sits below your underwear and bikini line. The clothing styles you prefer are taken into account during planning.
When will I see the final result?
The new shape starts to show from the first month; most of the result settles by month three. Full scar maturation, however, can take up to 12 months.
Will weight gain ruin the result?
Significant weight gain can stretch the skin again and change the contour with new fat; the muscle repair itself is largely preserved. The key to protecting your result is keeping a stable weight.
Can the abdomen sag again?
As long as your weight stays stable and there is no new pregnancy, the removed skin does not come back; apart from mild laxity with natural aging, the result is long-lasting.
Will my stretch marks be removed?
Stretch marks on the skin below the navel are removed together with that skin; those on the upper abdomen are shifted lower and look softer with the tightening, but they do not disappear completely.
Will I have numbness?
Temporary numbness below the navel is normal and largely resolves over several months; a small area of permanently reduced sensation is possible.
Safety and Risks
What are the most common risks?
Seroma (fluid collection), delayed wound healing, scar issues, mild asymmetry and, rarely, infection or blood clots can occur. Careful patient selection, meticulous technique and following instructions markedly reduce these risks.
What is a seroma and how is it managed?
A seroma is a collection of clear fluid under the skin; small ones absorb on their own, and larger ones can be drained with a fine needle if needed. Wearing the garment, and drains when indicated, reduce the risk.
How is blood clot (DVT) risk reduced?
Walking from day one, compression stockings, blood-thinning injections when indicated and early mobility are the standard precautions. This is also why long flights are avoided in the early period.
What if I need a revision?
Minor scar corrections or smoothing of small bunching at the ends (dog-ears) can usually be done under local anesthesia once the scar has matured. Whether and when it is needed is assessed together at follow-ups.
Which symptoms need urgent contact?
Contact your clinic or emergency services without delay if you notice fever, increasing redness or discharge at the incision, swelling or pain in one leg, sudden shortness of breath, or bleeding that will not stop.
Traveling to Istanbul and Planning
I am coming from abroad — how long should I stay in Istanbul?
For most patients a total of 10-14 days is recommended: arrival and consultation, surgery with 1-2 nights in hospital, then the first-week check and wound review. The exact plan is confirmed at your consultation.
When can I fly home after a tummy tuck?
Usually from days 7-10 onwards, with your surgeon's approval. On the flight, wear compression stockings, drink plenty of water and take a short walk every hour as a clot precaution.
Do you offer online consultations?
Yes; you can send photos of your abdominal area via WhatsApp for a preliminary assessment and an approximate plan. The final decision and measurements are completed at the in-person examination in Istanbul.
What determines the price of a tummy tuck?
The scope of the technique (mini, full, fleur-de-lis or 360), whether liposuction is added, hospital and anesthesia time, and accommodation needs determine the price. A clear, personalized quote is provided after your assessment.
