Liposuction —
Body Contouring

“In body contouring my aim is proportion, not excess; I create a natural, balanced line tailored to each body.”

— Op. Dr. Selman Taşkın · Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery

Liposuction contours the body by removing localised stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise (abdomen, waist, hips, arms, back, chin). It is not a weight-loss method; the goal is a better line and proportion. It is performed by our experienced team. For all surgical procedures see our surgical aesthetics page.

When performing liposuction, what we call the subcutaneous fat tissue also has two layers: namely, there is a superficial fat layer and a deep fat layer. But surgically speaking, as a plastic surgeon performing liposuction, how do we approach this? We divide these layers under the skin into three: a superficial, a middle, and the deepest layer. These layers, of course, can show variations across different regions of the body. For example, on the back, while the superficial and middle layers are much tighter and firmer in structure — meaning it is harder to perform liposuction there — the deep layer of the back is softer. But in a thigh or the abdomen, these can differ. While performing liposuction, one must pay attention to all this and be aware of them. We must avoid entering the superficial layer. In the superficial layer, there is a vascular network that supplies the skin, and when we enter the superficial layer we can damage that vascular network. We can disrupt the vascularity and blood supply of the skin. This can lead to what we call contour irregularities in the skin, causing a dimpled, indented and bumpy appearance, as well as causing necrosis by disrupting the skin's circulation — meaning non-healing wounds and similar issues on the skin. That's why it is truly necessary to be careful about this. Consequently, in liposuction, without damaging the superficial layer but by properly evacuating the underlying fat layers, we can reveal the definition of the muscles and other underlying structures — meaning the body's own natural contours — in a much better way.

The secret to a dramatic silhouette isn't always about what you add — it's about how strategically you remove. With liposuction, how do we do this? In the waist area, compared to other anatomical regions, there is a different situation: under the skin of the waist, the fat layer is usually larger and thicker. If we perform liposuction in the appropriate plane in the waist area — and this especially affects the transition to the buttocks — for patients who are bothered by this, we can achieve an effective result this way.

Liposuction Methods

The suitable method depends on the area, fat amount and skin; the decision is made by examination.

MethodHow It WorksHighlight
Classic (tumescent) liposuctionFat removal with cannula and vacuumEffective over large areas
VASER (ultrasound-assisted)Liquefies fat with ultrasound, then removesPrecise contouring, good for firm skin
Laser-assistedLaser for fat + skin tighteningSmall, precise areas
With fat transfer (BBL/face)Transfers harvested fat elsewhereAdds volume in the same session

The table is for general information; the suitable method is determined with a personalised assessment.

The Liposuction Process

  • Consultation: target areas, fat amount and skin elasticity are assessed.
  • Method and anaesthesia: classic/VASER/laser and general or local+sedation are planned by area.
  • Procedure: fat is removed with a cannula through tiny entries; fat transfer may be done in the same session.
  • Compression garment: given to reduce swelling and help the skin settle.
  • Same-day/observation: most return to daily life quickly; check-ups are planned.
  • Stay: a short stay in Istanbul may be advised by case.

Recovery, Result and Candidacy

  • A compression garment is usually worn for a few weeks; swelling subsides over time.
  • Most return to desk work within a few days; to heavy sport usually after a few weeks.
  • The result becomes clear as swelling settles and usually settles over a few months.
  • Permanence: removed fat cells do not return; but weight gain can enlarge remaining cells, so a stable weight matters.
  • Candidacy: localised excess fat, good skin elasticity and a stable weight are expected.
  • Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a weight-loss method; it is for contouring.

Liposuction — Frequently Asked Questions

Liposuction contours the body by removing localised stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise, using a cannula.
Abdomen, waist, hips, back, arms, inner thighs and the chin area, among other localised fat deposits.
No; liposuction is not a weight-loss method or obesity treatment. It removes localised excess fat to improve line and proportion.
Classic (tumescent), VASER (ultrasound-assisted) and laser-assisted methods. The suitable method is chosen by area and skin.
VASER liquefies fat with ultrasound for more precise contouring and can be advantageous for firm skin; the classic method is effective over large areas.
By area and plan, under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia + sedation, in a fully equipped setting.
Most return to desk work within a few days; a compression garment is worn for a few weeks and benefits the result.
The line emerges as swelling subsides; the final result usually settles over a few months.
Removed fat cells do not return; but weight gain can enlarge remaining cells. A stable weight maintains the result.

Stubborn fat areas (abdomen, waist, hips, back, arms, under the chin) are removed by vacuum through fine cannulas to reshape the body contour; I determine the areas together with you.
The removed fat cells are permanently gone; if you maintain your weight the result is lasting, though with significant weight gain the remaining cells can enlarge.
No; liposuction is not for losing weight but for shaping localised fat that diet and exercise cannot remove, giving the best result in patients close to their ideal weight.
There is mild swelling and tenderness for a few days; a compression garment is recommended for 3–4 weeks and most patients return to work in 3–5 days.
Because the cannulas enter through very small incisions, the scars are a few millimetres and become almost invisible over time.
General or local anaesthesia is used depending on the area and volume; afterwards there is a mild muscle-ache-like sensation that eases with simple painkillers.
You see the first contours within a few weeks; the final result appears at 3–6 months once the swelling has fully subsided.
Vaser and laser technologies dissolve fat more easily, allowing more precise shaping and some skin tightening; I choose the right technique for your anatomy.
If skin elasticity is good the skin adapts to the new contours; if there is marked laxity I assess skin-tightening methods within the same plan.
Healthy people close to their ideal weight, with good skin elasticity and localised stubborn fat, are the most suitable candidates.
