Is liposuction necessary along with a tummy tuck? A tummy tuck removes excess skin, and when there is damage to the muscles, we perform muscle repair. When we combine a tummy tuck with liposuction, we thin out the fat layer located beneath the skin and above the muscles, which essentially allows us to eliminate the fat layer that was obstructing the contour you were aiming for. As a result, that toned and athletic appearance becomes much more visible. When we combine a tummy tuck with liposuction, achieving the desired result becomes much easier.

Why Does the Abdomen Stay Protruded After Childbirth?

Op. Dr. Selman Taşkın — Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeon

In this short explainer, Op. Dr. Selman Taşkın explains why a protruded abdomen after pregnancy is most often caused by diastasis recti — separation of the rectus abdominis muscles — rather than fat alone, and when abdominoplasty with muscle repair is the more lasting solution.

Why does my abdomen remain protruded after childbirth? Many women assume that a persistent abdominal bulge is simply excess fat or loose skin. But one of the main reasons the abdomen may protrude forward after pregnancy is the separation of the abdominal muscles. This condition is called diastasis recti: the rectus abdominis muscles stretch and separate along the midline, causing the abdomen to bulge outward. Because the abdominal muscles become weakened, they can no longer adequately support the abdominal wall.

Along with loosening of the skin and connective tissues, the abdomen may not always regain its previous firmness after childbirth, since the tissues stretch significantly during pregnancy. Another contributing factor is changes in intra-abdominal pressure. Especially if weight gain occurs after childbirth, this appearance can become more pronounced.

So this condition is not solely related to body weight — it involves changes in the muscles, skin, and supporting tissues. The treatment approach varies from patient to patient: in milder cases, non-surgical treatments may be effective; however, when significant diastasis recti and skin laxity are present, surgical correction (abdominoplasty with muscle repair) provides more lasting results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does tummy tuck take?
Full: 3-4 hours, mini: 1.5-2 hours, lipoabdominoplasty: 4-5 hours.
Where is the scar placed?
Incision is hidden under the bikini/underwear line. Fades by 6-12 months.
Mini vs full?
Mini: sub-umbilical only, small incision, umbilicus stays in place. Full: entire abdomen, umbilicus repositioning, muscle repair.
Will rectus diastasis be repaired?
Yes, muscle separation is always repaired (rectus plication). Abdomen flattens, posture improves.
How long after pregnancy?
At least 12 months after last delivery. Postponed if more pregnancies planned.
How long compression garment?
4-6 weeks continuous, then 4 weeks daytime. Critical for skin tightening.
Are drains used?
Yes, drain in place for first 5-7 days — reduces seroma risk.
When can I exercise?
Light walking: week 2, active sports: 6 weeks, abdominal exercises: 8 weeks later.
Tummy Tuck and all aesthetic and surgical procedures are planned and personally performed by Op. Dr. Selman Taşkın, Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Under general anaesthesia, excess sagging skin and fat are removed, loosened abdominal muscles are tightened and a firmer, flatter contour is created; I plan to your body.
Liposuction only removes excess fat; a tummy tuck additionally corrects sagging skin and loosened muscles, and when needed I combine the two.
The incision is usually placed in the lower abdominal line that underwear will hide; the scar fades and becomes inconspicuous over time.
It is the combination, in suitable cases and in a single session, of procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast aesthetics and liposuction to restore the post-pregnancy body.
There is swelling and tightness in the first days and a compression garment is recommended for a few weeks; most patients return to light activity within 2 weeks and the result settles over a few months.
It is done under general anaesthesia with no pain; the tightness and tenderness afterwards are easily controlled with painkillers.
The removed skin and fat are permanently gone; with a stable weight and lifestyle the result lasts for many years, though large weight changes can affect it.
Healthy people with a relatively stable weight, excess skin or stubborn fat and realistic expectations are suitable; I assess suitability at the examination.
