Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that reinforces a jawbone that is insufficient for an implant, creating a solid foundation.
What is bone grafting?
Graft material (autogenous, synthetic or processed) is placed in jawbone that has resorbed after tooth loss, infection or trauma. During healing, the area fills with new bone and gains the volume needed for an implant.
When is it needed?
It is used when the bone height or width at the planned implant site is insufficient. In some cases it is done at the same time as the implant; in others, as a separate prior stage.

Healing process
Maturation of the grafted area with new bone usually takes a few months. Mild swelling can be expected at first; avoiding smoking and following the recommended diet and oral care support healing. When needed, follow-up imaging is used to monitor healing.
